Key Developments and Achievements

 

  • Founded as UberCab, Uber first lauched in and focused on San Francisco Bay Area.

 

  • February: Raised $11 million in Series A round of Benchmark Capital Firm

  • May: Started their national expansion into New York City

  • December: Started the international expansion into Paris (France). Raised $37 million in Series B round from many investors (Goldman Sachs, Menlo Ventures, Bezos Expeditions…)

 

  • July: Officially launched in London (UK) and first introduced UberX, a new service using lower-cost hybrid vehicles.

 

  • August: Expanded to Africa and India. Raised $258 million in Series C round at a $3.5 billion pre-money valuation, with investors such as TPG Growth and Google Ventures.

 

  • April: The transition of Uber into a logistics company by announcing a courier service using bicycle messengers to deliver packages called “Uber Rush”.

  • June: Raised $1.2 billion in a Series D round, with a pre-money valuation of $17 billion from BlackRock, Google Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Menlo Ventures, SherpaVentures, Summit Partners, and Wellington Management…

  • July: Expanded the presence in Asia (China) and Western Africa (Nigeria).

  • August: Introduced UberPool, which lets riders share rides based on proximity.

  • December: Continued to raise $1.2 billion at a $40 billion pre-money valuation in a Series E round, and also received a $600 million strategic investment from Baidu, a Chinese search technology company.

 

  • January: Launched Uber Cargo, which allows people to transport packages via Uber drivers in Hong Kong.

  • March: Made the first public acquisition, a map startup called deCarta.

  • July: Completed a Series F round to raise $1 billion at a $50 billion pre-money valuation, investors were Microsoft and Bennett, Coleman, & Co, Ltd.

  • August & September: Received additional funding of $100 million and $1.2 billion in private equity from the Tata Opportunities Fund (India) and Baidu (China) for their Asia expansion.

  • December: Uber announced that it raises $2.1 billion at a $62.5 billion valuation.
